Office Cartoonery

June 29, 2007

Over at simpsonsmovie.com you can (among many other time-wasting activities) create your very own Simpsons avatar. It was so much fun that I decided to recreate our entire office. Unfortunately, once you’ve created your avatars, the only option is to print it out. No image download option, no myspace embed code, just print. So, I printed each avatar as a PDF and then imported all of them into Photoshop for a group portrait:

My Samurize Bar

I know there are a few tools like this out there for both mac and pc that let you do this, but here at work I use a program called Samurize to display system data, email status, and other information. The program itself is all about the information you want to display and not how it looks, but it can be configured to look any way you want. The screenshot on the right is what mine looks like right now. There's a lot of information on this thing, but for now I wanted to point out the little image on the bottom. In the image is a live view of the heart of Pisa, Italy - looking down from the clock tower upon the Arno river which winds through the city. Since I took that screenshot though, that same square is now showing a view of the street outside a window of the Fashion Institute in Milan. The views are actually provided via a plugin for Samurize called FetchImage that randomly grabs an image every so many minutes from a list of URLS in an XML document.

I actually installed the plugin a few weeks ago, but after seeing all the talk out there on BoingBoing and various other weblogs about about finding unsecured axis webcams via google by simply searching for inurl:"ViewerFrame?Mode=", inurl:"view/index.shtml" or inurl:"MultiCameraFrame?Mode=", I thought people would want a good way to display their new found webcams about:

Candy Quiz

Jumart

May 31, 2004

Just in case you ever wondered what you get when breed a bull and a mare, I have the answer - a jumart. While playing Beyond Boulderdash with the young marrieds last night, we came across this odd word, and I promised to provide a picture if I could google up such a creature. No luck though. It's just a fabled creature - Which the Boulderdash card failed to mention.

Lego Jesus

May 26, 2004

The more i use StumbleUpon, the more I really love using it. It really is an innovative way to surf the web.

Today's most interesting stumble: The Brick Testament. It's a website of a guy who is illustrating the entire Bible using only Legos!

Andy Kaufman, Alive and Blogging.

May 20, 2004

Andy Kaufman is alive and posting on blogger.com exactly 20 years after his "faked" death? It's really tempting to completely discredit this as a big hoax. But after all...who else but Andy Kaufman would pull such a stunt?

Men of Metal

May 10, 2004

I know I've been spending too much time ranting about advertising, but while looking for new information regarding the Subservient Chicken everyone's been talking about, I found this page. The writer talks about an insert he had found in a magazine about a soon-to-be-published book about Humanoid Robots.

To make a long story (you really ought to read) short - the whole thing seems to be hoax marketing for the Mini Cooper. Although there is no direct evidence of this, the voice behind both Subservient Chicken and the Mini Cooper is a marketing company called Crispin, Porter + Bogusky. CPB has a history of alternative marketing and is responsible for the campaigns for truth, Molson, and Ikea - as well as Burger King and Mini Cooper. So, you be the judge. But be sure to check out the videos on "the professor's" webpage and be amazed at the depth of the deception produced for this campaign.

No Pants Day

April 30, 2004

So what if it's only a local holiday invented by a wacky group of college students at the University of Texas. It's the bestest holiday of all, and it takes place next Friday, May 7th. The "Knighthood of Buh" (Maybe they've seen Bah. Radio?) has claimed this as a day where everyone, be they students, respectable businessmen, or cherished community leaders, leave their pants behind.

That's it? Yep.

Am I going to participate? Probably not. But it's nice to know there's a holiday for pantlessness.

Subservient Chicken

April 16, 2004

It's amusing to me to see the way the creepy/offbeat humor of the internet is making it's way into the corporate marketing arena.

The quizno's we love the subs commercials were a great example of this. Now, Burger King is getting into the action. Check out Subservient Chicken.com! I don't know how watching a chicken do what I tell it to will make me eat at BK, but at least it's not your typical advertising!

Komar.org

April 12, 2004

Out of the billions of personal sites out there, I have randomly googled my way to komar.org twice now.

The first time was a few weeks ago when I was looking for generic pictures of swimming pools to use for an aquatics website I was working on. When I saw a picture of a larger-than-life incredible hulk in pool on google image search, I had to check it out. We got lots of laughs here at the office over all the hulk pictures but had to get back to work and didn't explore the rest of the site.

Then today, I was working on a site about conserving bats and in my frustration searched for "bat hunting" and: www.komar.org/faq/hunting_bats/ came up as number 6 in Google.

That's not all. Be sure to read on for more than you ever wanted to know about BBQ Modding, Growing Grass, Hunting Squirrels, and his 1972 Oldsmobile Delta 88 Convertible.

Maze Maker

March 26, 2004

Every once in a while I stumble upon something so outrageous, unique, intriguing that I just have to share it with somebody. Today, that discovery was Maze Maker. Somebody actually took the time to write a program that creates mazes in gif format to your exact specifications.

So today, mister master of maze making programming, today is your day.
